Chicago is the last major US city where 16-inch softball is played more than 12-inch — and it's the local specialty. If you've never played 16-inch, no gloves, no worries: everyone starts as a beginner.
The 16-inch leagues
- Chicago Sport & Social Club — the biggest social 16-inch league, plays across every major park.
- Grant Park Softball — historic downtown league with a serious competitive edge.
- Lincoln Park Softball Association — deep neighborhood league with 6+ divisions.
The 12-inch and fast-pitch leagues
For traditional 12-inch slow-pitch or fast-pitch, the Northwest Side and South Side leagues are your best bet. Fast-pitch specifically clusters at McKinley Park and Piotrowski Park.
When to sign up
Chicago's softball season runs May through August. Sign up in February or March — most leagues sell out by April.
